Cheltenham Township is preparing for new leadership as Police Chief John Slavin is set to retire on July 31, 2026.

With over 30 years of devoted service, Chief Slavin has been a pivotal figure in guiding the Cheltenham Township Police Department.

Township officials have launched a nationwide search for a new chief, seeking someone who reflects Chief Slavin’s commitment and expertise.

Matthew Areman, president of the Board of Commissioners, emphasized the need for a successor who values both law enforcement skills and community engagement.

Since joining the department in 1989, Chief Slavin climbed the ranks, becoming chief in 2022 and ensuring the department’s long-standing accreditation.

The department continues to prioritize inclusion, notably affirming support for immigrant communities and upholding progressive policies.

The next chief will be chosen by early summer, promising steady leadership for Cheltenham Township’s future.
